Pediatric Upper Respiratory Diseases and Surgery

What are Pediatric Upper Respiratory Diseases?
Upper respiratory diseases in children include infections and disorders of the nose, throat, nasal passages and pharynx. These diseases can negatively affect children’s quality of life, resulting in sleep problems, breathing difficulties and frequent illness. Although upper respiratory tract diseases are usually caused by viral infections, bacterial infections, allergic reactions or anatomical disorders can also cause such problems. The most common upper respiratory diseases in children include colds, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis and adenoid enlargement.

How are Pediatric Upper Respiratory Diseases Diagnosed?
Upper respiratory tract diseases in children are usually diagnosed by physical examination and some additional tests:

  1. Physical Examination: The doctor carefully examines the child’s nose, throat and nasal area. Symptoms such as cough, runny nose, sore throat and breathing difficulties are questioned.
  2. Laboratory Tests: If necessary, blood tests or throat cultures may be performed to determine whether the illness is caused by a virus or bacteria.
  3. Imaging Techniques: Imaging methods such as X-rays or endoscopy can be used to diagnose sinusitis, adenoid size or structural disorders.

Pediatric Upper Respiratory Diseases and Surgical Interventions
Upper respiratory diseases are usually treated with medication, but in some cases surgical intervention may be required. Here are the most common upper respiratory tract diseases in children and surgical treatment methods:

  1. Adenoid Enlargement Adenoids are lymphatic tissues located at the back of the nose and can often become enlarged, especially in young children. Growing adenoids can cause nasal congestion, snoring, mouth breathing and sleep apnea. Adenoids can be surgically removed through the nose, usually under general anesthesia.
  2. Tonsillitis and Tonsillectomy: Tonsils are lymphatic tissues in the throat and can cause frequent infections in children. Again, recurrent infections or large tonsils can cause breathing problems. Surgical removal of the tonsils can be an effective solution for such cases.
  3. Sinusitis Sinus infections in children are usually viral, but in some cases bacterial infections can also develop. Chronic sinusitis can cause nasal congestion, headaches and night coughs. Treatment of sinusitis may require surgical opening of the sinus tracts.
  4. Nasal Septum Deviation: The septum is a structure consisting of cartilage and bone that divides the nose into two parts. Congenital septum deviation in children can lead to nasal congestion. With the surgical intervention called septoplasty, the nasal septum can be corrected and a better air flow can be provided.

What are the Symptoms of Upper Respiratory Tract Diseases in Children?
Symptoms of upper respiratory tract diseases may vary according to age, but the following symptoms are usually present:

  • Nasal Congestion and Runny Nose: Nasal congestion and runny nose are common, especially in case of colds or sinusitis.
  • Cough Chronic cough is usually caused by inflammation in the throat.
  • Sore throat and difficulty swallowing: It is especially evident in pharyngitis and tonsillitis.
  • Snoring Children may snore or mouth breathe at night due to adenoid size.
  • Breathing Difficulties: Severe nasal congestion or enlarged adenoids can make it difficult for children to breathe properly.
  • Fever Most upper respiratory diseases can cause fever due to infection.
  • Fatigue and loss of appetite: Constant nasal congestion and a sore throat can make a child feel lack of energy and loss of appetite.

Treatment Methods for Pediatric Upper Respiratory Tract Diseases
Treatment of upper respiratory tract diseases varies depending on the type of disease:

  • Viral Infections: Most upper respiratory tract infections are viral in origin and such infections usually get better on their own. Treatment is aimed at relieving symptoms. Fluids, moist air, rest and painkillers may be recommended.
  • Bacterial Infections: If the disease is caused by bacterial infections, antibiotic treatment may be needed.
  • Allergic Rhinitis: Antihistamines, nasal sprays and avoidance of allergens may be recommended in the treatment of allergic rhinitis.
  • Surgical Interventions: Surgical treatment may be required in cases such as adenoid enlargement, tonsil infections and deviated septum.
