What is Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD)?
Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat precancerous lesions and early stage cancers, especially in the stomach, intestines and other digestive tract. In this procedure, the tissues around the lesion are carefully cut and removed, thus treating the disease without the need for larger surgical interventions. ESD is an effective and safe treatment method, especially for early-stage cancers.
How to do ESD?
ESD is performed with the help of endoscopy and special cutting instruments are used during the procedure. Once the lesions are detected, the submucosal layer is opened through the endoscope and the lesion is carefully separated. ESD is usually performed under local anesthesia and patients feel minimal pain during the procedure.
ESD Symptoms and Conditions Requiring ESD
ESD is usually applied in the following situations:
- Early stage stomach or bowel cancer
- Polyps or other benign tumors
- Premature lesions that can lead to digestive tract cancer
- Recurrent polyps and tumors
Treatment Methods
In most patients treated with ESD, the lesions are completely removed and do not require surgical intervention. Patients are monitored for a few hours after the procedure and can usually be discharged the same day.
