Brain Tumor Surgery

What are Brain Tumors?
Brain tumors occur when cells in the brain grow and multiply abnormally, forming a mass. Tumors can be cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). Brain tumors can cause symptoms such as headaches, seizures, loss of balance, visual disturbances, changes in consciousness and neurological deficits. Because tumors grow in sensitive areas where brain tissue is located, they may require rapid surgical intervention. Brain tumors can be primary (developing first in the brain) or metastatic (spreading to the brain from other organs). Both types are treated with surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

How is Brain Tumor Surgery Performed?
Surgical treatment of brain tumors depends on the size, location and type of tumor. Brain tumor surgery usually aims to remove as much of the tumor as possible. However, in some cases, it may not always be possible to remove the tumor, in which case different treatment methods are used to control the growth of the tumor. Brain tumor surgery consists of the following steps:

  1. Preparation and Anesthesia:
Brain tumor surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The patient is completely asleep and the head is kept in a stable position so that the surgeon can intervene at the tumor site.
  2. Opening the skull (craniectomy):
The surgeon opens the skull by making an incision in the appropriate area of the head. After opening the skull, access to the brain tissue is gained. The opening in the skull is usually small and precise.
  3. Removing the tumor:
The tumor is carefully removed using microscopic observations and various imaging techniques (e.g. MRI). How much of the tumor is removed depends on the location and type of tumor and its effect on the surrounding tissue.
  4. Checking Brain Function:
During brain tumor surgery, neurological tests may be performed to preserve the patient’s brain function. Preserving brain function is critical for the surgeon to safely perform tumor removal.
  5. Skull Closure and Recovery:
After the tumor is removed, the skull is put back in place and the cut tissue is closed with sutures. The patient’s recovery depends on the type of operation and complications.

Conditions and Symptoms Requiring Surgery for Brain Tumors
Brain tumor surgery is necessary in the following cases:

  • Tumors that grow and pressurize: Tumors that press on brain tissue, causing headaches, nausea, vomiting, seizures and changes in consciousness.
  • Tumors that impair brain function: Tumors with neurological symptoms such as impaired motor skills, speech or vision problems, loss of balance.
  • Metastatic Tumors: Masses formed by cancerous cells that spread from other organs to the brain.

Treatment Methods and Why Metropol Health Group?

Surgery is usually the first step in brain tumor treatment. However, in some cases, post-surgical treatment methods may also be required:

  1. Radiotherapy:
Radiotherapy can be used to destroy tumor cells that remain after surgery.
  2. Chemotherapy:
In cancerous brain tumors, chemotherapy can be used to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
  3. Targeted Therapy:
Targeted therapy methods aim to target cancer cells and treat them without harming healthy cells.
