What is Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)?
Endoscopic Mucosal Resection is an endoscopic method used in the treatment of early stage cancers and premalignant lesions. This procedure provides non-surgical removal of cancerous tissue or polyps in the early stages of cancer cells. EMR is usually performed in the intestines, stomach or esophagus.
How is Endoscopic Mucosal Resection Performed?
EMR is performed through an endoscope. First, cancerous or suspicious tissue is identified with the endoscope. The tissue is then removed from the mucosa and sent to the laboratory for histologic examination. The risk of bleeding during this procedure is minimal and the patient’s recovery is quick.
Symptoms and Conditions Requiring
EMR is usually performed when
- Early stage cancer of the stomach or intestines
- Polyps
- Early signs of gastric or colorectal cancer
- Abnormal cell growth
Treatment Methods
During the Endoscopic Mucosal Resection procedure, cancerous or abnormal tissue is removed in a minimally invasive way without surgical intervention. A biopsy is taken and a definitive diagnosis is made.
