What is Epiduroscopy?
Epiduroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used in the diagnosis and treatment of pain in the spine and lower back. In this procedure, a small camera is inserted into the epidural space, the outer part of the spinal canal. Epiduroscopy is generally used in the treatment of low back pain, back pain, nerve root compression, spinal stenosis and disc herniation. With this method, patients’ pain can be treated directly and the need for surgical intervention can be eliminated.
How is epiduroscopy performed?
The epiduroscopy procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and the patient remains awake. The surgeon makes a small incision and inserts a special camera (epiduroscope) into the epidermal area. The epiduroscope provides detailed information about the problem areas by visualizing areas such as nerve structures, discs and connective tissue in the spine. In this procedure, the surgeon can see the problem area directly and apply treatment to relieve pain (for example, steroid injections) or other healing techniques. Epiduroscopy consists of the following steps:
- Preparation and Anesthesia:
The patient is prepared for treatment under local anesthesia. By providing regional numbing, it is ensured that the patient does not feel pain during the procedure. - Inserting the camera:
The epiduroscope is inserted into the epidermal space through a small incision. The camera provides a clear view of the tissues and nerves in the spinal canal. - Diagnosis and Treatment:
Using visual data, the surgeon evaluates the nerve roots, discs and other structures. If necessary, pain-relieving procedures (steroid injections, spacing procedures) can be performed.
Conditions and Symptoms Requiring Epiduroscopy
Epiduroscopy is usually preferred in the following cases:
- Chronic low back pain and back pain
- Disc herniation or herniation
- Nerve root compression
- Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
- Intradural or epidural bleeding
- Pain conditions resistant to surgical intervention
Treatment Methods for Epiduroscopy
Treatments with epiduroscopy are minimally invasive methods to relieve pain, relieve inflammation and promote healing. These include:
- Steroid Injections: Used to reduce pain and inflammation by targeting the nerves.
- Laser Treatment: Laser treatment can be applied to reduce the pressure on the disc and nerves.
- Physiotherapy Referral: Following the treatment process, physical therapy can accelerate the healing process.
