What is ERCP?
ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) is an endoscopic procedure used to diagnose and treat diseases of the bile ducts and pancreatic duct. This procedure is performed to treat gallstones, blockages or problems in the pancreatic duct.
How is ERCP Performed?
ERCP is performed by examining the bile ducts and pancreatic duct through an endoscope. The tip of the endoscope is guided into the duodenum and X-rays of the duct are taken with a contrast medium. During this procedure, blockages can be opened, gallstones removed or stents inserted.
ERCP Symptoms and Conditions Requiring ERCP
ERCP is recommended in the following cases:
- Gallstones or pancreatic stones
- Bile duct obstruction
- Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
- Bile duct cancer
Treatment Methods
During ERCP, gallstones or blockages in the pancreatic duct can be removed. In addition, stents can be placed in the bile ducts if necessary.
