What is Gastroscopy?
Gastroscopy is an endoscopic procedure to examine the stomach, esophagus and duodenum. Through a flexible tube, a camera is used to view the inner surface of these organs. The underlying causes of complaints such as stomach pain, indigestion and bleeding are investigated. Gastroscopy can detect problems such as stomach ulcers, gastritis, reflux disease and cancer.
How is Gastroscopy Performed?
Gastroscopy is usually performed under local anesthesia or sedation. The endoscopy device is guided through the mouth into the stomach. During the procedure, doctors observe any abnormalities in the stomach and esophagus and may take a biopsy if necessary. The procedure can take 15-20 minutes and most patients go through the procedure comfortably.
Symptoms and Reasons for Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy is especially recommended in the following cases:
- Persistent stomach pains or heartburn
- Difficulty swallowing
- Stomach bleeding (hidden or open)
- Prolonged complaints of indigestion
Treatment Methods
During gastroscopy, some treatment methods can also be applied:
- Medication for the treatment of stomach ulcers
- Removal of polyps or cancerous cells
- Stopping stomach bleeding
- Treatment of lesions in the stomach wall
