Loringology

What is Laryngology?
Laryngology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the vocal cords, larynx and upper respiratory tract. This specialty aims to treat functional problems in the larynx and vocal cords, the organ where the voice is produced. Laryngology covers all anatomical structures and functions required for the correct production of sound and healthy communication. Conditions such as vocal cord diseases, sore throat, hoarseness, swallowing difficulties and laryngeal cancer are among the diseases that laryngology specialists deal with.

How is Laryngology Done?
Modern technologies and specialized techniques are used in laryngology treatment processes. The laryngologist examines the vocal cords and larynx in detail, finds the cause of the disease and applies the appropriate treatment method.

  1. Diagnosis and Imaging: The laryngologist listens to the patient’s voice complaints and symptoms. He or she then assesses the movement and health of the vocal cords using methods such as laryngoscopy and stroboscopy. Laryngoscopy is an endoscopic device that allows direct visualization of the throat and vocal cords. Stroboscopy is used to analyze the vibrations of the vocal cords in detail.
  2. Surgical Interventions: Laryngology surgery includes procedures such as removal of vocal cord nodules, polyps or cysts, treatment of laryngeal cancer and repair of the vocal cords. The surgeon usually performs operations using minimally invasive methods.

Laryngology Diseases and Symptoms
Laryngologists deal with many different diseases of the voice and larynx. These diseases include the following:

  • Vocal Cord Nodules and Polyps: These structures, which form due to overuse of the voice, can lead to hoarseness or loss of voice.
  • Laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx): Inflammation of the larynx can occur as a result of viral or bacterial infections. This causes hoarseness, sore throat and coughing.
  • Larynx Cancer: A disease that can be treated with early diagnosis, but can cause serious health problems when it progresses. Cancer can affect the vocal cords and cause people to lose their voice.
  • Dysphonia (hoarseness): Problems such as deterioration in the quality of the voice, hoarseness or complete loss of voice can be caused by functional disorders in the vocal cords.
  • Swallowing Difficulties: Weaknesses in the muscles and tissues in the vocal cords or larynx can cause difficulty swallowing.

Laryngology Treatment Methods
Laryngologists use a variety of treatment methods to maintain patients’ vocal health. These treatment methods include:

  • Medical treatment: Antibiotics, corticosteroids and voice therapy can be used for infections or inflammation.
  • Voice Therapy Vocal cord disorders can be treated with voice therapy, sometimes without surgical intervention. The voice therapist teaches the patient correct voice use and techniques.
  • Surgical Intervention: Structures such as vocal cord polyps, nodules and cysts can be surgically removed. Cancerous tissues can also be surgically removed.
  • Larynx Cancer Treatment: In early stages, it can be treated with surgery or radiotherapy. In advanced cases, some or all of the vocal cords can be removed.
