What is Neck Hernia?
A herniated disc in the neck occurs when the intervertebral discs (the cushions between the vertebrae) in the spine slip out of place or tear. This can cause the discs to press on the nerves, causing pain, numbness, weakness and sometimes limitation of movement in the neck, shoulders, arms and hands. Cervical herniated discs usually develop due to the aging process, trauma, incorrect posture, overuse or genetic predisposition. In the early stages, treatment is usually done with physical therapy and medication, while surgical intervention may be required in severe cases.
How is Neck Hernia Surgery Performed?
Cervical hernia surgery can be performed with different techniques depending on the patient’s condition, location and severity of the hernia. The surgery is performed to remove pressure on the nerves and relieve pain. Surgical intervention usually includes the following steps:
- Preparation and Anesthesia:
Cervical hernia surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. The patient is completely asleep and does not feel pain during the procedure. Some minimally invasive techniques can be performed under local anesthesia. - Surgical Technique Selection:
Several different techniques can be used in cervical hernia surgery:- Anterior Neck Approach (Front Access): The herniated disc is accessed through an incision made in the anterior part of the neck. The herniated disc is removed and usually replaced with an implant or prosthetic disc.
- Posterior Neck Approach (Access from the Back): The spinal canal is accessed through an incision made in the back of the neck. In this approach, the herniated disc part that presses on the nerve roots is removed.
- Removing a herniated disc:
The surgeon carefully removes the herniated disc or the displaced part of the disc. The aim is to relieve pain by removing pressure on the nerves. - Fixation and Recovery:
After the herniated disc has been removed, sometimes a spinal fusion or an artificial disc may be inserted to stabilize the spine. After surgery, patients are kept under observation in hospital for some time.
Conditions and Symptoms Requiring Cervical Hernia Surgery:
Cervical hernia surgery is generally preferred in the following cases:
- Severe neck and arm pain, pain that does not respond to medication.
- Loss of strength and numbness in the arm and hand.
- Movement difficulties that limit activities of daily living.
- Risk of permanent nerve damage.
- Neurological symptoms (for example, difficulty walking or loss of balance).
Advantages of Neck Hernia Surgery:
- Rapid Reduction of Pain: Surgical intervention usually leads to rapid pain relief and helps patients to move more comfortably.
- Permanent Solution: Surgery offers a permanent solution as it relaxes the nerves and eliminates the pain at its source.
- High Success Rate: Cervical hernia surgery has a high success rate when performed with the right technique and an experienced surgeon.
