Thyroid Surgery

What is Thyroid Surgery?
Thyroid surgery is a surgical intervention to treat diseases occurring in the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is an organ located in the front of the neck that produces hormones that regulate metabolism. Thyroid diseases include various conditions such as enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter), nodule formation, thyroid cancer or thyroid hormone imbalances. Thyroid surgery is an effective method in the treatment of these diseases.

The aim of thyroid surgery is to remove diseased tissue and restore proper thyroid function. Surgical intervention is often necessary because of problems with the thyroid gland, such as enlargement, nodules, cancer or excessive hormone production.

How is Thyroid Surgery Performed?
Thyroid surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia and there are two main types:

  1. Total Thyroidectomy It is the removal of the entire thyroid gland. It is usually performed in cases of thyroid cancer or bilateral thyroid diseases.
  2. Subtotal Thyroidectomy: Only part of the thyroid gland is removed. It is generally preferred in the treatment of benign nodules or goiter.

In thyroid surgery, great care is taken to prevent damage to the vocal cords and parathyroid glands that are close to the thyroid gland. Therefore, it is very important that surgeons are experienced in this field. After surgery, thyroid hormone levels can be regulated and patients can usually be discharged within a few days.

Conditions and Symptoms Requiring Thyroid Surgery:

Thyroid surgery is usually performed in the following cases:

  • Thyroid Cancer Surgical intervention is performed when malignant tumors are found in the thyroid gland.
  • Goiter: An enlarged thyroid gland can cause swelling in the neck and difficulty breathing. This may require surgical intervention.
  • Thyroid Nodules Surgical treatment may be necessary in the presence of large nodules that carry a risk of cancer.
  • Hyperthyroidism (excessive thyroid hormone production): Excessive hormone production by the thyroid gland may require surgery in cases that cannot be treated with medication.
