Tonsilectomy

What is Tonsilectomy?
Tonsilectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils. Tonsils are lymphoid tissues located on both sides of the throat that protect the body against infections. However, tonsils that overreact to infections or are constantly infected can lead to health problems. Inflammation of the tonsils, infections or respiratory problems may require surgical removal of the tonsils. Tonsillectomy is a procedure that can also be done in adults, although it is more common in children. Tonsillectomy is performed to remove the tonsils, prevent infections and relieve blockages in the throat.

How is tonsilectomy performed?
Tonsilectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon removes both tonsils, gaining access through the mouth or throat. The removal of the tonsils is done carefully by the surgeon because it is important not to damage the surrounding tissues.

  1. Preparation and Anesthesia: Before surgery, general anesthesia is administered after the patient’s health condition is evaluated.
  2. Surgical Procedure: The surgeon accesses the tonsils through the mouth and surgically removes both tonsils.
  3. Recovery: After surgery, the patient’s recovery usually takes a few weeks. During this time, sore throat, difficulty swallowing and mild bleeding may occur.

Conditions and Symptoms Requiring Tonsilectomy
Tonsilectomy may be recommended in the following conditions and symptoms:

  1. Frequent Infections: Frequent inflammation of the tonsils, infections that do not go away with antibiotic treatment.
  2. Breathing Difficulties: Night snoring or apnea (stopping breathing during sleep at night) due to overgrown tonsils.
  3. Chronic sore throat: Persistent sore throat and swallowing difficulties.
  4. Tonsil Stones The formation of inflamed stones in the tonsils often leads to bad odor.

Recovery After Tonsilectomy
Recovery after tonsilectomy varies depending on the age and general health of the patient. Children usually recover faster, while adults may have a longer recovery. During recovery, it may be necessary to eat soft foods, drink plenty of water and use painkillers. After surgery, patients are usually advised to rest and avoid heavy physical activity for 1-2 weeks. Also, although the risk of bleeding after surgery is low, it is something to be aware of.
