What is Gastroenteritis?
Gastroenteritis is a disease caused by inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It usually develops as a result of infections due to viruses, bacteria or parasites. The most common cause is viral infections and is known as “stomach flu”. Gastroenteritis causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. In severe cases, dehydration and electrolyte imbalance may occur.
How is Gastroenteritis Treated?
- Fluid and Electrolyte Support:
It is important to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and to take saline fluids to maintain electrolyte balance. In case of severe dehydration, intravenous fluids can be administered in the hospital. - Antibiotic or Antiviral Treatment:
Antibiotic treatment can be used for bacterial infections and antivirals for viral infections. However, antibiotics are usually unnecessary in the treatment of most viral gastroenteritis. - Antiemetic and Antidiarrheal Medicines:
Medicines used to control vomiting and diarrhea. However, care must be taken when using these medicines because in some cases diarrhea is the body’s mechanism to fight infection.
