Microdiscectomy

What is Microdiscectomy?
Microdiscectomy is a surgical procedure for the treatment of herniated spinal discs in the lumbar and cervical spine, which compress the nerves and cause pain, numbness and muscle weakness. In this procedure, only the herniated parts of the discs are removed with microsurgical techniques, thus preserving healthy tissues. Microdiscectomy is a minimally invasive surgery and provides less trauma and faster recovery time than traditional open surgery. It is usually used to treat a herniated disc or a herniated disc in the neck.

How is microdiscectomy performed?
A microdiscectomy is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon accesses the spinal canal through a small incision. Then, using a microscope or special camera, the herniated disc material is carefully removed. This procedure relieves pain and speeds up functional recovery by removing pressure on the nerves. Microdiscectomy includes the following steps:

  1. Preparation and Anesthesia:
The patient is put to sleep under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision in the spine and accesses the procedure area.
  2. Microscopic Imaging and Disc Extraction:
With the help of a microscope or endoscopy, the surgeon clearly sees the herniated disc material and removes only the damaged section.
  3. Recovery:
The procedure is usually completed in a short time and patients can be discharged after a few hours of observation in the hospital. Microdiscectomy is known for its short recovery time and low risk of complications.

Conditions and Symptoms Requiring Microdiscectomy
Microdiscectomy is usually performed in the following cases:

  • Severe Back or Neck Pain:
Pain caused by pressure on the nerves due to a herniated disc.
  • Numbness or Tingling:
A herniated disc can press on nerve roots, causing numbness and tingling in the legs, arms or hands.
  • Muscle Weakness:
Pressure on nerves can cause muscle weakness and loss of function.

Treatment Methods
Although microdiscectomy is a surgical procedure, it is usually preferred when other conservative treatment methods are inadequate. In the first stage, patients are usually recommended physical therapy, medication and epidural injections. If these methods are not successful and the patient’s quality of life is severely affected, microdiscectomy may be recommended.
