Sinus Surgery

What is Sinus Surgery?
Sinus surgery is a surgical intervention for inflammation, infections or anatomical problems of the sinuses. Sinuses are air-filled cavities around the nose that produce mucus. Conditions such as sinus infections (sinusitis), sinus congestion or polyps can lead to complaints such as headaches, nasal congestion, facial pain and even vision problems. Sinus surgery is performed to treat such problems, improve the function of the sinuses and improve the patient’s quality of life.

How is Sinus Surgery Performed?
Sinus surgery is usually performed with minimally invasive (closed) methods, but in some cases open surgery may also be required. The most common methods of sinus surgery are:

  1. Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS): This is an operation using an endoscope to clear obstructions and remove blockages in the sinuses. Through the nostrils, the sinuses are directly cleaned and inflamed tissues are removed.
  2. Removal of sinus polyps: Endoscopic methods can be used to remove polyps in the sinuses. Polyps are benign structures that grow as a result of inflammation in the nose and sinuses and block the airways and can be removed by surgical intervention.
  3. Sinus Shunts and Ducts: In cases where the sinuses are infected due to fluid accumulation, a shunt or canal can be opened to allow the fluid to drain out.

Symptoms and Conditions Requiring Sinus Surgery
Sinus surgery is usually required in the following cases:

  • Chronic sinusitis: It is characterized by nasal congestion, headaches and facial pain lasting 12 weeks or more.
  • Sinus Polyps The growth of inflamed tissues in the nose and sinuses that block the sinus passages and may require surgical intervention.
  • Sinus Infections: Long-standing infections that do not go away despite antibiotic treatment.
  • Breathing Difficulties: Breathing may become difficult due to blockages in the sinuses blocking the airways.

Sinus Surgery Treatment Methods
Sinus surgery treatment usually includes the following steps:

  1. Drug Treatment: Antibiotics and steroid drugs can be used to treat infections in the sinuses. Inflammation can be reduced by applying medication before surgical intervention.
  2. Surgical Intervention: Using endoscopic methods, blockages and polyps in the sinus tracts are removed.
  3. Rehabilitation and Follow-up: Postoperative nasal cleansing, moisturizing sprays and regular follow-up accelerate the healing process.
